| Tucked away in a neighbourhood on the north side of Berlin is Vagabund Brauerei a nano-brewery located in a small ground level store front location. Founded by three American friends whom found themselves in Germany for some what similar reasons with a shared interest in homebrewing. Opening their doors in 2011 Vagabund started to generate a good deal of intrigue in the Berlin craft beer scene The Vagabund Brauerei is a nano-brewery meaning that its production brewing volume is less then three barrels (93 US gallons). This small production size matched with selling most of the beer in their own taproom allows Vagabund to brew with a great deal of creative freedom. Beginning as homebrewers the founders of Vagabund; David Spengler, Tom Crozier and Matt Walthall bring on going passion to their brewery. They brew the beer, serve the beer in their taproom and more importantly make a point to talk to anyone interested in learning more about beer and Vagabund brewery. On the day of my visit this past summer the taproom had just opened for serving hours. The draft lines where hosting a couple of Vagabund's own summer offerings and a number of guest beers and a guest group from a local Berlin organization were setting up for a public live podcast. I was able to meet Tom, Matt and David and pick their brains about everything beer; recipe formulations, hops, the other breweries in Berlin and the native craft beer drinkers of the City. The Berlin beer market is unlike the rest of Germany the city's international population and the many cultures it attracts, makes for a diverse consumer tastes. These diverse tastes allows for nano and micro breweries in the city to brew a range of beer styles. The brewery and taproom of Vagabund is a testament to the community involvement and support that Vagabund represents to their Berlin neighborhood community. When you make your trip over to Berlin make a highlight of your stay a beer at Vagabund and support a brewery doing and brewing good things in a top travel destination of the world.
