| While reaching out to the breweries in the Czech Republic I received an email response and invitation to the brewery by one of the oldest continually running breweries in the country. U Fleku Brewery in center Prague is the only brewery to be continually brewing for over 500 years. The brewery is world renown for their black lager that is exclusive to their own restaurant and event spaces in their compound in the heart of Prague. The brewery has been a stable social gathering place for over 500 years, where both locals and travels meet to share company, food and good beer. U Fleku's compound takes up roughly a city block near the central hub of Prague. I was asked to visit the brewery on one of their brew days. Having had arrived at the brewery early in the morning to view their brewery and meet the U Fleku brewers I then continues to take the tour of the rest of the compound. There is so much history that is embedded is every inch of the U Fleku compound that by the time I was done with the tour it was nearly time for an early dinner. U Fleku like many breweries that were brewing back several hundred years ago malted their own brewing grains. Many breweries used to take on the very expensive, difficult and time extensive grain malting process. Though unlike other breweries they malted in the middle of a busy capital city and only started to buy in malted grain from outside sources just over one hundreds years ago. The brewery still has their old maltry open to the public as part of their brewing history museum. You can learn through the multiple exhibits how traditional breweries used to in house all their own brewing processes from materials and equipment to process and chemistry. After you are done with your tour and visit to their museum you can then relax in the open air beer garden while enjoying a pint or two along with some traditional Czech bar foods and music. The brewery has been in operation for the time that it has due to its family ownership through out it's history. The U Fleku compound used to be smaller than it currently is. It expanded gradually over the past few hundred years to support its growth. Acquiring neighbouring buildings surrounding the central brewery the U Fleku compound gradually grow to its current size and has allowed for the organization to hold events, multiple beer halls and restaurants. It is easy to spend the entire day at U Fleku enjoying the beer and culture. Before you have that one pint that puts you over than edge, ask your self. |
